The Precious, Precious Ice

It was less than one month ago that we saw the page one, lead-story, hysterical and apocalyptic reports that the North Pole will have no ice for the first time in human history. Here is an AFP iteration of the story that swept through the country in an attempt to give credence to the ever-faltering myth known as Global Warming Hoax:

North Pole may have no ice this summer: US expert

Jun 27, 2008
WASHINGTON (AFP) — There could briefly be no ice at the North Pole this summer, a US scientist said Friday, an event that would mark a new stage in the melting of the Arctic ice sheets due to global warming.

“We could have no ice at the North Pole at the end of this summer,” Mark Serreze, a scientist with the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado, told AFP in an interview.

“And the reason here is that the North Pole area right now is covered with very thin ice and this ice we call first-year ice, the ice that tends to melt out in the summer.”

If the ice, albeit briefly, were to break up completely this summer it would be the first time this had happened in human history.
Panic established. How likely is this to happen?

Serreze put the chances of this occurring at 50 percent -- if it does happen, in September “it’s possible” that ships could sail from Alaska right to the North Pole.
Fifty-fifty chance of losing the precious, precious ice? Oh my! How reliable is this judgment?

Last summer, melting ice allowed ships through the Arctic's Northern Passage linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans for longer than ever before.
Argh! It’s happening! The sky really is falling!

But he recognized the symbolism of an ice-free North Pole in the minds of the public, and said it was yet another indication of the environmental changes taking place because of global warming.
Aha! Just another indication of the reality of the hoax. This is worthy of mention, because this is exactly how Global Warming Hoax believers operate: thin ice is an indicator. So, what if the ice were thicker? Would that be an indicator that Global Warming Hoax is bunk? Of course not. Perhaps a visiting moonbat can explain this then? From the very same organization that brought you the page one, lead-story, hysterical and apocalyptic reports less than one month ago:

Previous discussion (see April 7, 2008) presented evidence that much of the Arctic Ocean this winter and spring, including the area near the North Pole, was covered with fairly thin, first-year ice. This thin, young ice is vulnerable to melting completely in summer. The large areas of low-concentration ice discussed above reinforce this concern.

Figure 5 shows sea ice thickness for late winter of 2006, 2007, and 2008 derived from the NASA ICESat laser altimeter instrument and provided by Ronald Kwok at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Based on Kwok’s analysis, the first-year ice that formed since last autumn, while spatially extensive, has a mean thickness of 1.6 meters (5.2 feet), which is close to the thickness seen in 2006 and 2007. Much of this season’s first-year ice formed rather late last autumn, so we had expected to see thinner first-year ice.

So why is the first-year ice thicker than anticipated?
Let me take a wild guess at the moonbat answer: the ice is thicker because of Global Warming Hoax. Per usual, the facts get in the way of the story, so the facts don’t see page one. Similarly, as noticed by Jon at Crush liberalism, the Science and Public Policy Institute just published a report titled “Proved: There is no climate crisis”. Since this report also deals with facts that get in the way of the story, don’t look for it as the headline story on your favorite news show or fishwrap.

What will all the believers do when the “consensus” is no more? When scientific reputations are ruined by continuing to support this garbage, where will the believers go? They can’t follow The Grateful Dead anymore. What will they do now (other than not shower)?

Rebuttals:
Wow, I never imagined that scientific truth was considered moonbattery.....Corporations oppose any sort of environmental regulations because THATS HOW THEY MAKE THEIR MONEY! So NOW you conservatives admit that global warming IS happening and so you're trying to stipulate that it has nothing to do with human activity...*brilliant*

Wow, it is so rare that a moonbat comments here with the following:

1) Anonymous post
2) Claim that Global Warming Hoax is “scientific truth”.
3) Expressing hatred for eee-vil corporations having the audacity to *gasp* make money!
4) Feeble reading comprehension skills.

The Earth is currently in a cooling trend. The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicted as much. Regardless of whether the planet is in a warming or cooling trend, it is quite foolish to think we have any ability to alter it. It is even more foolish to think doing so (if we could) would be a good idea!

I’m not sure where you got the notion that I or any other conservative, “admit that global warming IS happening”. However, if you need me to make an admission, here it is:

You’re a moron. I’m certain your parents are terribly disappointed in you.

Talk about timing! A barking moonbat hits a nearly two month old article, and this just happens to pop up at American Thinker:

“The amount of sea ice around Antarctica has grown in recent Septembers in what could be an unusual side-effect of global warming, experts say.”

Gotta love those “experts”, eh? At the end of June, the dire prediction was no ice at all – because of Global Warming Hoax. Now, near the middle of September, the dire prediction is that there is more ice – because of Global Warming Hoax. I must wonder if this is all part of that “scientific truth” to which our courageously anonymous moonbat referred.
