One American’s Poem

Racism, racism abound,
No solution or remedy found,
Affirmative action; civil rights,
No solace for sleepless nights,

Lawsuits for Border Patrol,
While Black Panthers shout vitriol,
Legal hate flows just one way,
I’m told it is my price to pay,

Yet I have never owned a slave,
Nor been the cause for another’s crave,
Living life the American Way,
Working hard, with taxes paid,

I find that now in fatherhood,
A great burden understood,
What shall I tell my son,
About the great atrocity he has done?

Has he hurt, scorned or aggrieved,
The people who are so peeved?
Has he stolen, subjugated, exploited,
Has he dominated, oppressed, extorted?

When The Panthers come to kill my son,
What shall I tell him that he has done?
Do I continue teaching wrong and right,
When his crime is being white?

Forgetting that Irish were also oppressed,
Should we just sit depressed?
When government fails to act,
To prosecute based on fact,

Those who suggest to kill,
Anyone with free will … who happens to be a “cracker”?

How do I ever begin to explain this to my son?

This is so beautiful. I agree, how do you explain to the children what has and is happeneing in the world, but especially our country today? I am scared as hell as to what is going to be left of this great nation for future generations. I love this poem and I love you sweetie!

Nice work, TB. This filmed rant needs to be given all the publicity it can garner.

I didn't realize that you were also a talented poet.

Darlin', you need to come up with a chord progression and melody for this. Just sayin'.

Thank you Master Sergeant. As usual, your compliments are well received and appreciated. As alluded by One Mom below your comment, I am really a songwriter versus a poet. Six of one, half dozen of the other...

Mrs. R - I was thinking that when I was writing it. However, I would prefer my next song to be less ... well ... melancholy. I have been getting the itch, though. Maybe something in the near future for Mr. R and I to long-distance collaborate on, eh?
